Tigers compete in home tourney at Turkey Creek
The Tiger Men and Women golf team competed in their home tournament this past Monday and concluded today. Both men and women got off to a good start on Monday.
The men opened up with a team score 292 highlighted by Tyler Swanson, Fisher Kautsch, and Matt Rettinger who all shot a 72. Freshman Cristian Cardiel would come in with a 76 and to round out the top 5 Nathan Segler shot a 82. Coach Moody was pleased to see Tyler Swanson battle back after opening up his front nine with a 41 and to come back on the back with a 31 to get his team back in the action. The Men would turn back around and play another 18. Tyler Swanson would continue with the good play and shoot an even par 70. Matt Rettinger would finish with a 73, Nathan Segler bounced back from his opening round of 82 and knocked 9 strokes off to shoot a 73. Fisher Kautsch would struggle a bit in round two and shoot a 77. Cristian Cardiel would finish out the top 5 with a 80. At the end of the day the men found themselves in 2nd place trailing Garden City and having a sizeable lead over 3rd place Hastings. Four of the Tigers competed as individuals led by Mark Ostruske who shot 74,75, Trehern McGill would be next with a 81,74 and Conner Stephenson would shot a 85,74. Kyle Bovee would finish up with a 83, 89.
The Lady Tigers would keep the momentum going from their previous performance and find themselves once again in the mix. The women opened up with a team score of 344 (3 out of first place). Kari Kirl would once again led the team with an opening round 81, followed by Kendra Jellison's 83. Baily Bowman had another solid outing as she fired a 88. Alyssa Ramirez would follow up with a 92 and Vanessa Warner would finish out the women with a 97. Grace Little who competed as an individual would shoot a 105.
Both Team would finds themselves with a chance to take home some hardware and possibly have a chance to take home the 1st place trophy. Day two proved to be a tougher day as the Kansas winds kicked up and presented a new challenge to the teams from the day before.
The Tiger men came out and grinded as best as they could and shot a 303 which wasn't good enough to take over 1st place Garden City as they completed their dominate performance with a final round 285 to win by 40 strokes. The Tigers didn't give up their 2nd place spot though as they still found themselves ahead of 3rd by 20 strokes. Fisher Kautsch would find a way to improve from round two and shoot a solid 74 in the windy conditions. Nathan Segler and Matt Rettinger would shot respectable 76's and Tyler Swanson would finish with a 77 to put him in 6th place overall missing the top 5 by one stroke. Christian Cardiel would finish out the top 5 with a respectable 78. Connor Stephenson would lead the indivduals today as he shot a 75, Mark Ostruske would shoot a 80, Trehern McGill would shoot a 84 and Kyle Bovee would round out the individuals with a 97.
The Women also battled through the tough conditions and came up 5 strokes short of first place Barton Community College after a second round 345. Kari Kirl once again led the team shooting a 78, Kendra Jellison also improved and shot a 81. Baily Bowman shot another 88, Alyssa Ramirez struggled a bit and wound up with a 97 and Vanessa Warner would also shot a 97 rounding out the top 5. Grace Little improved 18 strokes and finished with a 87. Another highlight was Kari Kirl found her way to a 2nd place finish with a 81-78. Kendra Jellison also found the podium with a 4th place finish to cap off the 2nd place team finish.
Coach Moody had this to say about the Tigers performance " I am proud of the way both teams played over the last two days! Both the men and women played great. Kari and Kendra put together two good rounds for this tournament!"
The Tigers golf team will be back in action next week in Oklahoma City as they compete at Lake Hefner hosted by Southwestern Christian University.
