Edmond, OK – On Monday and Tuesday, the Central Christian College men's and women's golfers competed in the NCCAA Central Regional Tournament jointly hosted by Oklahoma Baptist University and Southwestern Christian University at the Golf Course at Edmond in Edmond, Oklahoma.
The Tiger men finished the 54 hole tournament in 7th place with a team total of 970. The team improved each round, opening with a 327, finishing with a 320, and a 323 sandwiched in between. Sophomore Collin Duckworth was the top individual finisher for the Tigers with a three round total of 238. Duckworth opened with and 81, 77 on Monday, and then finished Tuesday with an 8 over par 80 that put him in 22nd place in the standings. The rest of the scores for the Tigers are below.
Coach Moody summed up the men's performance saying, "The Golf Club of Edmond is a challenging course. It was very tight with water and/or out of bounds on every hole. The conditions on Monday were tough as the guys had to play 36 holes in 108 degree heat. We are gaining more and more experience. We improved our team score after each round even in tough conditions on a tough course. Although we did not place as high as we'd like I am encouraged by how these young men are learning to respond adversity."
On the women's side, the Tigers had just two golfers healthy enough to participate in the regional, so no team score was recorded. While the men played 36 holes on day one and then 18 on the second day, the women's tournament was a 36 hole format with 18 on each day. Kari Kirl was the low individual medalist for the Tiger women. Kirl shot a 183, opening with 95 then bounced back on day two with an 88. She finished the tournament tied for 25th. Hayley Smith was the other Tiger golfer in the field. Smith finished in 30th place shooting a 203.
Moody praised the resiliency of the ladies saying, "I am very proud of the way Kari and Hayley battled through the tough conditions this week. Both days the temperature rose above 100 degrees with a heat index as high as 108 on Monday. Both girls managed to improve on their scores on day 2."
Both Tiger teams will be back in action October 3rd and 4th at the Salina Country Club in Salina, KS in a tournament hosted by Kansas Wesleyan University.
