Central Christian College of Kansas men soccer team opens up their season Saturday 8pm vs Manhattan Christian College.
The Tigers are looking to start off the season on the front foot after a successful preseason that included two wins and a draw. Coach Hoxie commented, "I am happy about our preseason. We've never beaten the alumni before, and we throttled them handily, won a hard fought game at Southwestern College, and came back from two goals to draw Pratt Community College a few nights ago. It's not so much the results but it is how we played that I enjoyed, together. For us, it's not about the individual, and these lads believe it." Saturday marks the first official game for the Tigers since coming off their historic season.
The Tigers qualified for the NCCAA National Tournament where they finished in 5
th place, setting many historic firsts along the way. The run continued into conference play where they qualified as the 8 seed for the Sooner Athletic Conference. From there they won two matches on the road against the top seed and fifth seed, earning a shot at the NAIA National Tournament. Unfortunately, the dream run ended in penalties, ending the historic run. But Hoxie doesn't want to focus on the past, it's all about the now.
"It's easy to discuss and focus on what we have accomplished last year. But that is over and it is a part of our legacy now, part of what makes this team who we are. We discussed it one time to let the players know that is the new benchmark and we've since moved on. These guys are built differently, their mentality is stronger, and their commitment to each other is unrivaled amongst our teams. I think that this version will be creating their own legacy. They have brought the joy back."
