Mathis Signs with CCC Women's Tennis
McPherson, KS – May 13, 2013 – Central Christian College head tennis coach, Jeremy Nelson, is pleased to announce the addition of Shelbi Mathis to the 2013-2014 women's tennis roster. Mathis, a senior at Chapman High School in Chapman, Kansas has signed a national letter of intent to play tennis for the Tigers next season.
Shelbi was a four year letter winner for coach Derek Berns and the Chapman High School Irish. She qualified for the 4A state tournament his past season, just missing out on a top ten finish. Coach Berns commented on Shelbi's ability saying, "Shelbi has been one of our hardest workers our program has had come through in the last few years. She has been a leader through her great work ethic and desire to learn and play tennis outside of the normal practice time. Our program is excited about what Shelbi can offer at the next level and wish her the best next year at Central Christian."
Coach Nelson thinks big things are in store for Shelbi and the Tigers next season. "I saw Shelbi play at a tournament last summer. I instantly knew that she could play at the college level, and be an impact player for our program. She has a great foundation, and we will build on that foundation to help her reach her tennis potential."
Shelbi has excelled in the class room as well. She will graduate this month with a 3.2 cumulative high school GPA, but is currently undecided on her major at Central. Shelbi is the daughter of Russel Mathis, and Jennifer Merritt of Junction City, Kansas. She will join her new teammates in August when new freshman report to campus.
