Tigers Fall to MACU 3-0

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 Oklahoma City, Okla. – It was a brutal week for the Central Christian College baseball team, playing seven games in a span of seven days. After their weekend series with SAGU that was moved to Sunday and Monday, the Tigers played a "mid-week" game at home against the Kansas Wesleyan University Coyotes on Tuesday. After four games in three days, the Tigers took a couple of days off then went back on the road for a Sooner Athletic Conference series Friday and Saturday against the Mid-America Christian University Evangels.

After going 1-2 against the SAGU Lions on Sunday and Monday, the Tigers took on the Kansas Wesleyan University Coyotes at Tiger Stadium on Tuesday evening. The Coyotes came into the game ranked 16 in the NAIA preseason top 25 coaches' poll. The Tigers went the distance in the nine inning game, but ultimately came out on the short end of the decision 16-7. The highlight of the game was a 3 for 4 performance from the dish by JJ Esparza that included a pair of homeruns.

On Friday, the Tigers travelled down to Oklahoma City for a three game series with SAC foe Mid-America Christian University. The Evangels came into the series sitting in second place in the conference standings, while the Tigers were in ninth. The Evangels took all three game of the series, outscoring the Tigers 40-9.

The Tigers dropped the opening game of the series 14-3. They got on the board first on an RBI single by Landen Volner, but then the Evangels score seven unanswered runs between the first and fifth innings to take a 7-1 lead. The Tigers put another run up on the fifth, but then the Evangels responded with another 7-0 run to lead 14-2.The Tigers scored one more time on a solo homerun by Joseph Gusman in the top of the seventh, making the final deficit 11 runs.

Timothy Escamilla led the Tiger offense with a 2 for 4 performance that included a double, a run scored and one RBI. Peyton Ramsey was on the bump for the Tigers to start game one. He took the loss going four innings and allowing seven runs, five of them earned, on six hits with two strikeouts and three walks.

In the second game on of the day one double header, the Tigers fell to the Evangels 10-2. Mid-America got out to a 3-0 lead through three innings before the Tigers finally found the scoring column in the top of the fourth when Timothy Escamilla scored from third on a wild pitch. As has unfortunately been the case this season for the Tigers, they had one bad inning in game two that took them out of contention. The Evangels put up five runs in the bottom of the fifth to go up 8-1. They added two more in their next at bat to make it 10-1. The Tigers got their second run of the game in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Eli Campbell that scored Sam Metzger.

The Tigers had only three hits in the game, all singles by Escamilla, Metzger, and Campbell. Cole Hancock was the starter on the mound for the Tigers in game two. He went four and a third, giving up six runs, five of them earned, on six hits. The finished with five punch outs, and four walks.

The Tigers and Evangels finished the series on Saturday with a single nine inning game that turned into a seven inning game because of the run rule. Mid-America's bats remained hot, and they finished the series sweep with a 16-4 victory. It was 13-0 in favor of the home side heading into the fourth inning. The Tigers got their first run of the day on an RBI single by Alan Gutierrez that scored Carlos Gusman. After MACU scored one in the fifth, the Tigers responded with another run in their half of the sixth, this one on a single by James Perales, scoring JT Taylor. The Evangels scored another in the sixth making the score16-2 heading into what would end up being the final inning. The Tigers put up two runs in the top of the seventh, both coming on a double by Gusman, but it wasn't enough to extend the game.

The Tigers' four runs came on eight hits, led by Guiterrez who 2 for 4 with a run batted in. Colt Gniech got the start in the finale and was collared with the loss. He went two and a third, alloing eight runs on eight hits with a pair of strikeouts and three walks.

The Tigers are now 7-20 overall on the season and 1-8 in SAC play. They will be back in action on Tuesday afternoon, in a single nine inning game against the Missouri Valley Vikings in Marshall, Mo. First pitch is slated for 2:00 pm.
