The 21-22 season was a great building year for the Central Christian College of Kansas baseball program. The team fielded a young team with 97% freshman and sophomores, as they looked to build on promising young players. During this campaign, the Tigers posted many improvements throughout the entire program. They had the most wins since 2017, set the program record for pitching strikeouts (301), set the home run record for the program (34), lowered the team ERA, and had the first complete game shutout in five years.
Offensively, the Tigers flexed their muscle with two players,
Koki Matsuda and
Mason Seay, vying for the single season home run record at 10 apiece. Not to be one dimensional, the Tigers offense also showed off their speed as they tallied 84 stolen bases for the year—most since 2017.
The biggest jump was the on the bump as the Tigers saw massive gains from its young core. Led by freshman
Michael Pelosi, sophomore
Tristan Castner, and junior
Marshall Owens, the pitching staff lowered the team ERA from the previous year, set the program strikeout record, and added a complete game shutout against Arlington Baptist University on February 11
th. Freshman
Allen Gutierrez also led the team with 2 saves. "It was a great showing for our young team. I believe that we have a great core to build with and continue with an upward trajectory," head coach
Stephen McNett said. "Our defense and inexperience in pressure situations hurt us this year, but moving forward with real game time experience, I am excited knowing where we are headed."
The Tigers graduated 1
st Team All-Conference Outfielder
Koki Matsuda who batted .465 with 10 home runs, 34 RBI, and 26 stolen bases. While the team will miss his presence, the experience that was gained by the freshmen in 2022 will carry over to 2023 season and yield great outcomes.
