TIGERS TAKE DOWN THE LIONS 1-0 !

3/27/2021 9:00:00 AM

Box Score 3/26/2021 - Waxahachie, TX

The Tigers were all geared up and ready for action as they took on Southwest Assemblies of God University Lions for the final spot in the SAC Tournament. They were coming off of a narrow 2-1 victory over Texas Wesleyan and needed three more points to get them closer to the goal. A victory today means that they are all but assured that final spot.

The game got off to a cracking start as the Tigers forced the Lions GK into key saves. Several efforts coming from inside the box from Tyler, Carlos, Matias, Drew, and Leslie, none of them finding their marks. Part way through the half, Leslie found the ball off of the CB foot but his shot smashed the inside of the post.

The Defending for the Tigers was stout, only conceding one shot, and that was from range. There were several other half chances, but they were sniffed out smartly by the back line. But at the end of 45 minutes the match remained knotted at nil.

"We discussed starting on the front foot and taking the sail out of the game. We controlled the ball, played direct when needed, and we generally forced the run of play. Part of getting the win today was remaining committed to the defensive phases of the game. We transitioned well and ultimately held our line when needed." Coach Hoxie added.

At the start of the second half, the Tigers were again on the front foot. Some quality build up play out of the back earning the first goal of the game. Tyler received the ball from a switch of play. His entry pass was knocked down nicely from Drew into Leslie's run. Leslie found Matias who had moved smartly into open space, allowing the gap to open for Drew. His ball through the line found Schrader, who at full speed is someone to be feared, easily rounded the keeper and slotted the ball home. Great build up play as three freshman and two seniors were involved in the move.

"Excellent entry pass, excellent touch, excellent decision from Matias and Leslie, and excellent finish from Drew. Exactly what the game needed and a great start to the second half." Hoxie said.

The game would drag on with minimal action but with the Tigers controlling things again. With about 15 minutes left the Lions were carved open again by Leslie, only this time Sammy Jaime was the benefactor but his breakaway effort found the post. Unlucky for the freshman speedster who created the space for himself after some nifty foot work.

With 10 minutes left, the game changed. The Lions tossing numbers forward, changing their shape again, forcing some real nervy moments. Coach Hoxie, trying to see the game out at this point, countered, and the players got the job done in the end with no real threats. With the win, the Tigers take sole possession of 8th place with 7 points. SAGU has 3 remaining games left and could take the 8th position away if they take all 9 point from those games. Those games are starting Monday.

"Excited for the kids to have the opportunity for postseason play. We did what we needed to do today, and it was difficult, but we earned it. It's been a very difficult and emotional time going though the conference. The boys worked very hard at trying to change the culture and legacy of our team in this conference. We compete, and do what is required, and that's enough."
