McPherson, Kan. – The Central Christian College women's soccer hosted the Bethany College Swedes on Monday evening, resuming a game that was originally started on August 27. 54 minutes and 50 seconds into the original contest, the game was suspended due to lightening. The game couldn't be resumed on the original date so the game was rescheduled for this evening. The Tigers played tough, but ultimately fell 3-1 to the Swedes.
Bethany led the Tigers 3-0 when the game was called, but the final play back on the August 27, was a foul by the Swedes inside the 18 yard box that was ruled a penalty kick for the Tigers. So tonight, play resumed with 35:10 on the clock, and a PK for the Tigers. The Tigers called on Emma Bressler to take the attempt. The Swedes' keeper guessed and dove to her right, but Bressler's try went the other way. She nearly got too much air on the ball, but it struck the crossbar on the underneath side and caromed across the line for a goal.
Throughout the game, including the 54 plus minutes played 10 days ago, the Tigers were just as good, if not better, than their counterparts from Lindsborg. The three goals the Swedes scored were breakdowns by the Tiger defense, but they couldn't overcome those miscues because they weren't very sharp in the offensive third of the field. They did a nice job of playing through the midfield, and creating good looks for the forwards up top, but they just couldn't seem to get on the same page once they got the ball into their offensive third.
Katelyn Beckman was in goal for the Tigers, and was collared with the loss. Between the two nights, she faced eight shots on goal and stopped five of them. In all, the Swedes outshot the Tigers 18-11, and 8-3 in shots on goal.
Coach Macharia commented on the game saying, "This being our first game of the season, Bethany exposed a lot of our weakness and things that you only learn when you play games compared to practice. As we finished the last 35minutes of the game today, I felt the girls gave a better account of themselves. Now we are preparing to be on the road for 2 games."
The Tigers will head out on the road this upcoming weekend for a pair of games down in the Dallas / Fort Worth area. They will take on Arlington Baptist on Friday, then wrap up the road trip with a game on Saturday against Texas College.
