Bethany, OK - Central Christian College of Kansas men soccer team traveled to Bethany, Oklahoma to face conference rivals Southwestern Christian University Eagles Tuesday evening. With both teams sitting on 4 points in conference play, a win today would be vital in determining playoff seeding.
The first half was played exactly as Coach Hoxie would have wanted and expected. The Tigers stiff resistance to anything the Eagles tossed their way was no surprise, with a stalemate for most of the half. When the Eagles were able get something off,
Sebastian Herrera was there. The half would end at nil.
Coach Hoxie commented on the half, "good things from our boys this 45. We were solid in all the right spaces and forced them into areas where we thought we could control them a bit more. We didn't give up a shot in the run of play, which was evidence of our shape and commitment. All of their chances came off of set pieces, corners to be exact…but Seba was there to sniff anything out. He played really well. We didn't put as much of a priority on the attack during this phase, which came down to game management more than anything."
In the 2nd half, the Tigers opened their lines up more with an intent to try and get players forward. As the half wore on, the tactic began to take its toll on the players and space was abundant. It was during this time that SCU would take the lead, off a corner kick of course. In what Coach Hoxie described as "Chuckie-Cheese" the goal came as a result of a Tiger player not paying any attention to what was going on around him. A simple back post training ground header really.
In the final phase of the game, the Tigers opened their lines up more and really began to press the ball higher up the field. With all of that ground to cover, it was just too much space, and the Eagles would finally find a goal in the run of play, to take the commanding 2-0 lead with 3 minutes left. The Tigers would finally get one back but it was too little too late with
Arthur Pancoto getting his second of the season. The pass from
Johnny Rodriguez was perfect giving a small sliver of hope. The Tigers created a corner and free kick in the final 50 seconds but failed to put anything on frame. The game would finished 1-2, handing the Tigers their 8th one goal loss of the season. Hoxie summed up his thoughts on proceedings:
"Once again we gave ourselves a great chance to get a result out of the game. Our guys are committed to the cause and I couldn't be prouder of their work rate and desire. As predicted, the game was won and lost in the boxes, as these things tend to be. We've got to find a way to be better on both ends if we are going to get to the show."
The Tigers are back in action on Saturday when they host Science and Arts of Oklahoma for a 3:30pm kickoff.
