Coach Swaney is originally from Ventura, California, and completed his undergraduate and graduate studies at the University of Redlands in Redlands, California. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in History in 1996 and, then, went on to pursue a Master’s degree in Education Counseling. He earned his Master’s degree in 2000.
Coach Swaney has coached cross country and track at all levels. His most recent stint before coming to CCC was at Tabor College. He got his start in coaching as a graduate assistant coach at his alma mater in 1998. After finishing his graduate studies he was hired as the head track and cross country coach at Arrowhead Christian Academy. In September of 2003 he was hired as the head cross country coach at Escondido Charter High School. In 2005 he took his talents to the college ranks, getting hired as the head cross country and track coach at West LA College in Culver City, California. He took another assistant coaching position at Santiago Canyon College in 2008 in Orange, California, before winding up at Tabor College in February of 2009.
During his five seasons at Tabor College, he coached 12 All-KCAC award winners, six men and six women, including the first woman in school history to be first-team all four years. She also won the first conference titles in school history as a junior and senior. He had five men and four women qualify for the NAIA National meet. In track he coached mid-distance and long jump and triple jump. In four seasons Swaney coached women to All-KCAC awards in eight individual indoor track events and six indoor relays (there has only been an indoor conference meet for two years) as well as 15 individual outdoor events and seven outdoor relays. Among those were three indoor titles and seven outdoor titles. He had women qualify for NAIA indoor nationals in two individual events, with one earning an All-American award, and NAIA outdoor nationals in 11 individual events and one relay. He also coached men to All-KCAC awards in 15 individual indoor events and six indoor relays as well as 16 individual outdoor events and 10 outdoor relays. Among those were nine indoor titles and three outdoor titles. Men he coached qualified for NAIA indoor nationals in four individual events and two relays and NAIA outdoor nationals in seven individual events and three relays.
Dan and his wife Kimberly reside in Hillsboro, Kansas where Kimberly is the director at Main Street Ministries. They have three small children, Wilson, Carolyn, and Lauren.
