Game Recap: Softball | | Chad Clevenger - Sports Information Department

Tigers Split with Southwestern

Game 1: Central Christian Tigers 11, Southwestern College Moundbuilders 4
The Central Christian Tigers earned their first win of the season in a dominant 11-4 victory over the Southwestern College Moundbuilders. Madalyn Griffin pitched a complete game, allowing 3 earned runs and striking out 9 batters to lead the Tigers to a well-rounded win. Despite a slow start, the Tigers' offense came alive in the third inning, scoring 3 runs and never looking back, adding runs every inning after that.

Offensively, the Tigers were on fire, collecting 16 hits in the game. Camryn Frick had a stellar performance, going 3-for-5 with 3 runs scored and a stolen base. Ashley Vaccaro contributed significantly, going 1-for-3 with a triple, 3 runs, 2 RBI, and 2 walks. Paige Major was an offensive powerhouse, going 3-for-5 with 2 doubles and driving in 5 RBI. Paris Tate also added to the scoring, going 2-for-3 with a double, 2 RBI, and 2 runs scored, along with a walk. Mary DeLaGarza and Abby Schleisman both added multiple hits, each going 3-for-5 with a double.

Game 2: Central Christian Tigers 2, Southwestern College Moundbuilders 5
In the second game of the day, the Tigers showed early promise, taking the lead in the first inning. Camryn Frick opened the game with a leadoff hit, stole second, and scored on Paige Major's single. Frick had another great game, going 4-for-4 with a run scored, while Paige Major was 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI. Paris Tate continued her hot streak, finishing 3-for-3 with an RBI.

However, after the early offensive push, the Tigers' bats cooled off, and despite a late rally in the 7th inning—when Tate knocked in Baylee Blackburn—the Tigers fell short, leaving 2 runners on base and ultimately losing 5-2. Chelsie Hirtler took the loss for the Tigers, pitching 5 innings and allowing 5 runs while striking out 3.

Comments from Coach Scott Balbin:
"It was great to finally play again after a month of cancelled games. We started off a little shaky in the first game, but the offense showed up in the third inning and just rolled from there. Madalyn pitched well and the defense backed her up. It's always nice to get that first win of the season."

"We had similar opportunities in the second game but couldn't take advantage of them. It's early in the season, and we need to work through the inconsistencies."

The Tigers will play their home opener on March 5th in the Collegiate Cup against cross-town rival McPherson College. Games will be at 3:00 and 5:00pm. The game can also be seen on the SAC Sports Network. The Tigers currently hold a 3-2 lead in the overall standings of the Collegiate Cup over the Bulldogs.
