Tigers Take 3 of 4 from Peru State in Weekend Series

McPherson, Kan. – It was a big weekend for the Central Christian College baseball program, taking three of four, two of them in walk-off fashion, over Peru State College in their 2024 home opener.

Game one was the only loss in the series for the Tigers, a pitcher's duel that resulted in a 3-2 loss. The Tigers sent the Ramsey brothers, Peyton and Jordan to the bump, and they threw a superb game. Older brother Peyton got the start, giving the Tigers five strong innings. He gave up the ball to younger brother Jordan in the sixth inning trailing 2-1. The Tigers tied the game in the bottom of the sixth but then surrendered the lead again in the top of the seventh. The rally stalled in the bottom of the seventh, and the Bobcats escaped with a 3-2 win.

The night cap on Friday was a thriller. The Tigers had to come from behind twice and ended up walking it off in the bottom of the seventh. They trailed 3-0 after the first inning, led 5-3 at the end of the third, trailed again 7-5 after four, and heading into the bottom of the sixth Peru State led 11-6 and things looked daunting for Tigers. But the bats came alive in their final two at bats. They scored three in the sixth to cut the lead to two, and then three more in the seventh to finish the improbable comeback, winning 12-11.

Saturday started where Friday left off. The Tiger bats stayed hot, and they jumped out to a 5-2 lead over the Bobcats through four innings. They padded their lead with three more in the fifth, and seemed to have things well in hand. No lead is safe in NAIA baseball. The Bobcats scored seven runs in their next two at bats to take a 9-8 lead. Give credit to the Tiger coaching staff, they calmed the guys down, and they responded by tying the game up in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings. The Bobcats scored two more in the top of the eighth, forcing the Tigers to come up with some magic once again. The Tigers got a couple of timely hits, including a big double by Timothy Escamilla and a little help from the Bobcats on two misplayed ground balls that allowed the Tigers to score three runs and take game three 12-11.

The two walk-off wins for the Tigers seemed to take the wind out of the Bobcats' sails. Game four turned into a blowout for the Tigers, winning 22-9. They jumped all over the Bobcats taking a commanding 8-1 lead through the first two innings. Peru tried to make things interesting by scoring four in the top of the third, but the Tigers squashed any hopes they thought they had by scoring six in the third and seven in the fourth to lead 21-5, and slam the door shut.

Coach Quote: "It was great to see our offense come alive this weekend.  Metzger hit his first two home runs of his career and Gusman (Carlos) continued with his good hitting.  Ricketts came along well this weekend too.  Pitching wise, Mikulecky threw a gem going 6 innings in his first home start.  His development has been great and it's a testimony of his hard work.  We still have a lot to work on and get better at; base running and defense, but I am excited at how the guys are moving going into conference opening weekend." – Coach McNett

Next Up: The Tigers (6-10) will be back on the road on Tuesday for a midweek match-up against the Sterling College Warriors. First pitch is slated for 12:00 pm.
