Tigers Sweep Southwestern

Winfield, Kan. – The Central Christian College softball team got their first series sweep of the season, taking both games of a double header this afternoon against the Southwestern College Moundbuilders.

Game 1: W, 6-1

The Tigers opened the series with a 6-1 win. The CCCK ladies jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first, then added runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to close the game out.

Hitting: The Tigers picked up where they left off from the weekend offensively. They scored their six runs on ten hits that included five doubles.  

Pitching: Madalyn Griffin picked up her second win of the season, pitching a complete game against the Builders in game one. She scattered six hits, and allowed just one run. She fanned five and walked three on her way to the win.

Game 2: W, 7-6

Game two was a lot closer. The Tigers again jumped out to a 3-0 lead with one in the first, and then two more in the third, but the Builders responded with three of their own in their half of the third to tie the game. They then took their first lead of the series with a run in the bottom of the sixth. The Tigers rallied with four in the seventh to retake the lead 7-4, but then tried to make things interesting by giving back two in the bottom of the seventh. Fortunately the Tigers were able to put a stop to the Builder rally and escaped with a one run victory.

Hitting: The Tigers collected 10 more hits in game two, all of them singles.

Pitching: Sara Lynch got the start and pitched another complete game for the Tigers. She allowed six runs, but only three of them were earned runs as the Tiger defense committed four errors in the game, on five hits with a pair of strikeouts.

Next Up: No rest for the weary. The Tigers are scheduled to play their fourth double header in as many days on Tuesday. Weather permitting, the Tigers will be back in action at Sterling College for a double header starting at 3:00 pm.
