McPherson, Kansas - Central Christian College of Kansas is pleased to announce the hiring of Matt Roots as its newly-installed sports information director (SID). Matt is a familiar face to many, having announced numerous games and events at Central over the past couple of years.
Matt comes to Central from his hometown of Hutchinson, Kansas where he still resides with his family. He has been married to his wife Tricia (an admissions counselor for Central) for nearly 22 years, and they have two remarkable children (Riley 14), and Jayden (12). Matt received his Bachelors of Science in Family Ministry from Manhattan Christian College.
As part of the athletics program, the SID is a very important role and Matt's knowledge and love of athletics will be a tremendous help. Also known as a sports communication director or media relations director, the SID is a public relations specialist who works in the athletic sector for an institution or a specific team. In their role, SIDs work to promote a college's or team's activities and achievements so that they can receive recognition in the media. Some of their duties include:
- Compiling statistics about teams and athletes
- Issuing media credentials
- Coordinating press conferences and interviews
- Writing and issuing press releases
- Writing feature stories for publication
- Updating the athletic department's website
- Providing administrative help in the athletic department
When asked about what he is looking forward to most about this position, Matt said,
"I have had the opportunity over the past few years to see first-hand the positive impact that this institution has on those individuals who step foot onto the campus here. The passion, determination, and drive that the young men and women display here is truly inspiring. So many in this world are searching for purpose, and hope, and Central is a place where they can discover both of those along with a deeper relationship with Christ. I am looking forward to helping encourage them, and this institution in any capacity that I can."
Athletic Director Kyle Moody is looking forward to having Matt join the team, saying,
"We are excited to bring Matt on board with his love for Jesus, his 'can do' attitude, and his desire to serve students and coaches. We are looking forward to the energy he will bring day in and day out."
Matt takes over for alumnus Collin Duckworth (CC '19), who worked diligently at the role over the last couple of years. The College thanks him for his dedication to the job and wishes him well in his next endeavors.
