Langston, Oklahoma – The Men's Basketball Team held of the Langston Lions on a nice December day. The Tigers used the 1
st half to propel themselves past the Lions and, despite going 2-19 from the 3-point line in the 2
nd half, kept the Lions from mounting a comeback by utilizing points from the paint (38) and the bench (40).
The Tigers started the game off strong, scoring 9 unanswered points before the Lions were able to get a free throw to fall at the 17:53 mark. The team continued to build up a sizable lead through the midway point, leading 24-9. The half closed on a 21-17 run by the Tigers giving them a 45-26, 19 point lead with 20 minutes to go.
At the beginning of the second half, the team was able to maintain their substantial lead, but Langston started to show some signs of life and built a 17-8 run through the first ten minutes. The Tigers saw their 19 point lead turn into only 10 points midway through the quarter. The Tiger's offense, however, began to wear out the Langston defense and the team slowed the Lion's offense down enough to switch momentum back the other way. In the last ten minutes, the Tigers outscored the Lions 23-12 to earn the victory, 76-55.
The team improves to 10-3 (4-2 SAC) and sits in fifth place in the conference standings.
Head Coach
Tony Romero had this to say after the game,
"Super proud of our team. This was a brutal stretch of games in such a small amount of time. To come out 6-0 says a lot about our group of guys, they have approached each day as a new challenge, whether it was practice, recovery, film, treatment, or the game, they took on each day as business-like. The most special thing about this stretch is that we have had different guys step up on different nights. Our bench has been a strength. Our upperclassmen have shown solid leadership.
Our defense continues to develop to be a big part of who we are, tonight was no different. We would have liked to shoot the ball a little better in the second half, but our guys did enough to hold off a second-half run by Langston. We are looking forward to a few days off before we get back after it for the grind of conference play."
